Castello Carlo V is a 16th-century coastal fortress located on a rocky promontory beside the harbor of Monopoli in Puglia.

Built in 1552 during Spanish rule under Emperor Charles V, it formed part of a wider network of fortifications designed to defend the Adriatic coast from Ottoman raids and pirate attacks. The castle has a distinctive pentagonal design typical of Renaissance military architecture and incorporates older structures, including a medieval church and remnants of earlier fortifications.

Over time, it evolved from a defensive stronghold into a military headquarters and later served as a prison. Today, Castello Carlo V is one of Monopoli’s most important historic landmarks. Restored and open to the public, it hosts exhibitions, cultural events, and community activities while offering beautiful views of the sea, harbor, and historic town center.
