Verified Castello Carrarese

Este, Italy, Italy

Castello Carrarese is a medieval fortress in the town of Este, at the southern edge of the Euganean Hills in Italy’s Veneto region.

Its origins date back to the 11th century, when the Este family established a fortified residence on the site, helping lay the foundations of one of the most influential noble dynasties in medieval Italy. The original fortress was destroyed during regional conflicts and rebuilt in the 1340s by Ubertino da Carrara, ruler of Padua, giving the castle the form and name by which it is known today.

Its strategic location made it an important defensive stronghold throughout the Middle Ages. The castle was surrounded by impressive walls and numerous towers, many of which still survive. Although it gradually lost its military importance and parts of the original buildings disappeared over time, the fortified perimeter remains one of the most striking medieval landmarks in the region.

Today, Castello Carrarese is closely associated with the identity of Este. Its historic walls, towers, gardens, and archaeological heritage offer visitors a vivid glimpse into the town’s medieval past and its long connection to the Este and Carraresi families.
