Castello Dal Verme di Zavattarello
Zavattarello, Italy, Italy
Castello Dal Verme di Zavattarello is a remarkable medieval fortress that stands on a hill above the village of Zavattarello in Lombardy.
Its origins date back to at least the 10th century, and it became the seat of the powerful Dal Verme family in 1390, remaining under their control for nearly six centuries. Built entirely of stone, the castle is known for its massive defensive walls, some nearly four meters thick, and its commanding position overlooking the surrounding valleys.
Over the centuries, it played an important military role and was considered extremely difficult to conquer. After suffering damage during World War II, the castle was carefully restored and is now open to visitors. Today it hosts museums, exhibitions, cultural events, and historical reenactments, while offering panoramic views across the Oltrepò Pavese countryside.
