Castello De Sanctis is a medieval fortress perched on the slopes of Mount Morrone above the village of Roccacasale in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

According to tradition, it was built around 925 AD by the Counts of Spoleto to control access to the Sangro Valley and the Cinquemiglia Plateau, giving it an important strategic role in the region. Over the centuries, the castle was controlled by powerful families, including the Cantelmo and later the De Sanctis barons. It remained in use until 1803, when it was destroyed during the French campaigns.

Despite its ruined state, much of its distinctive triangular walled layout, towers, and defensive structures can still be seen today. Restoration work in the 1990s helped preserve the site, which now stands as one of Abruzzo’s most dramatic castle ruins. Its hilltop position offers impressive views over the Peligna Valley and provides visitors with a fascinating glimpse into the region’s medieval past.
