Castello dei Conti di Modica, located in the center of Alcamo in western Sicily, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles on the island.

Built mainly between 1340 and 1350 by the Peralta and Chiaramonte families, it served both as a noble residence and a powerful defensive fortress. The castle later became the property of the Counts of Modica, from whom it takes its name.

Over the centuries, it hosted important historical figures, including Emperor Charles V, survived attacks and restorations, and was eventually used as a town hall, prison, and public building. Today, the castle remains a landmark of Alcamo, distinguished by its imposing towers, fortified walls, and elegant medieval architecture. Restored and open to visitors, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Sicily’s feudal past and the history of the region.
