Castello dei Conti Guidi
Italy, Italy
Castello dei Conti Guidi, commonly known as Poppi Castle, is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval castles in Tuscany.
Located in the town of Poppi in the Casentino Valley, it was the seat of the powerful Guidi family, who ruled much of the region for several centuries. The castle's origins date back to the Middle Ages, with major construction and expansion taking place during the 13th century. The castle is renowned for its imposing tower, elegant courtyard, and impressive architecture, which is often compared to Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio and is traditionally linked to the architect Arnolfo di Cambio.
It also played a role in the history of the famous Battle of Campaldino in 1289, a conflict in which Dante Alighieri took part. Today, the castle houses museums, historical exhibitions, and the renowned Rilliana Library, which contains valuable manuscripts and rare books. With its well-preserved interiors, medieval chapel, and panoramic views over the Casentino Valley, it remains one of Tuscany’s most significant historical landmarks.
