Verified Castello del Carmine

Naples, Italy, Italy

Castello del Carmine was a major military fortress in Naples, built in 1382 by King Charles III of Durazzo to defend the city’s southeastern side near the port and the Mercato district.

Unlike Naples’ royal castles, it was designed purely for military purposes, with strong walls, towers, and artillery positions protecting the city from attacks by land and sea. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and strengthened, particularly during the Spanish period, when it became an important part of Naples’ defensive system.

It played a significant role in several conflicts, including the events surrounding the Neapolitan Republic of 1799, when it served as a strategic stronghold during the fighting. Most of the castle was demolished in the early 20th century during urban redevelopment projects. Today, only a few towers and fragments of the original structure remain, serving as historic reminders of Naples’ medieval and military past.
