Castello dell'Ettore
Apice, Province of Benevento, Italy, Italy
Castello dell’Ettore is a historic castle located in Apice Vecchia, the old medieval part of Apice in the province of Benevento.
Built on a strategic hilltop position, the castle dominates the village and has undergone several transformations over the centuries while remaining one of the best-preserved landmarks in the area. Its origins date back to the early medieval period, and it later became an important Norman stronghold. The fortress originally featured four towers, of which two remain today, along with underground passages that were once used as escape routes.
Over time, the building served various functions, including as a town hall, school, and museum. Today, Castello dell’Ettore is a cultural attraction known for its restored interiors, historical exhibits, and events. Located within the atmospheric “ghost village” of Apice Vecchia, which was largely abandoned after major earthquakes in the 20th century, the castle offers visitors a unique blend of history, architecture, and local heritage.
