Castello della Fava is one of Sardinia’s best-preserved medieval castles, standing on a limestone hill above the historic village of Posada on the island’s northeastern coast.

Built in the 13th century, it served as a stronghold for the rulers of Gallura and later came under Pisan, Arborean, and Aragonese control during Sardinia’s turbulent medieval history. The castle is famous for the legend that gave it its name, “Castle of the Bean,” in which townspeople supposedly tricked besieging attackers by feeding their last fava beans to a pigeon, making the enemy believe the fortress still had abundant food supplies.

Today, visitors can explore its surviving tower, walls, and ancient cisterns while enjoying spectacular views over the Posada River valley, nearby beaches, and the surrounding Sardinian countryside.
