Castello di Alvito
Alvito, Lazio, Italy, Italy
Castello di Alvito, also known as Castello Cantelmo, is a medieval fortress that stands on a hill overlooking the town of Alvito and the Comino Valley in Lazio.
Its origins date back to the 11th century, when it was built in a strategic position to control important routes between the valley and the Abruzzo region. After suffering major damage in the devastating earthquake of 1349, it was rebuilt and expanded by the powerful Cantelmo family, becoming the center of a significant feudal domain.
Although partly in ruins today, the castle remains one of the area’s most important historic landmarks, admired for its imposing architecture, rich medieval history, and panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
