Castello di Bibbione
San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Metropolitan City of Florence, Italy, Italy
Castello di Bibbione is a historic hilltop castle in the Chianti region near San Casciano in Val di Pesa, overlooking the Pesa Valley.
Its origins date back to the Early Middle Ages, with documented references from 997, and it was built in a strategic position to control the surrounding countryside and important routes through the valley. The castle was first associated with the Cadolingi family and later became one of the key strongholds of the powerful Buondelmonti family, forming part of a defensive network of castles in the area.
Over time, as military threats declined, the fortress was gradually transformed into a noble country residence while retaining much of its medieval character. Today, Castello di Bibbione remains a well-preserved historic estate surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and rolling Chianti hills. Its ancient walls, medieval village setting, and long agricultural tradition make it a notable example of Tuscany’s blend of history, architecture, and rural culture.
