The fortress was owned by influential noble families, including the Fornari and Spinola families, and played a role in several regional power struggles.

Today, the castle survives largely as a ruin, but its remaining walls and distinctive semicircular tower continue to highlight its historical importance while offering panoramic views of the surrounding valley and Apennine landscape.
