Castello di Cairo Montenotte
Italy, Italy
Castello di Cairo Montenotte is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Cairo Montenotte in Liguria’s Bormida Valley.
Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it served as the residence of the powerful Del Carretto family and controlled important trade routes linking Liguria with inland Piedmont. The castle later passed to the Scarampi family and remained an important military and noble stronghold until it was heavily damaged during conflicts in the 17th century, leaving it in ruins.
Today, the remaining structures are a prominent local landmark, valued for their medieval history and panoramic views of the surrounding valley.
