Castello di Calatubo
Italy, Italy
Castello di Calatubo is a medieval fortress located on a rocky hill near Alcamo in northwestern Sicily, overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare.
Although its documented history dates to the Norman period in the late 11th century, the site was inhabited much earlier and contains evidence of ancient settlements and a necropolis, highlighting its long strategic importance. During the Middle Ages, the castle formed part of a coastal defense network that helped protect western Sicily by transmitting warning signals between nearby fortifications.
As military needs changed, it gradually lost its defensive role and was transformed into an agricultural estate with warehouses, stables, and other rural buildings. Today, Castello di Calatubo survives as an impressive but partially ruined landmark. Despite years of neglect and damage, it remains one of the most evocative castles in the Alcamo area and is valued for its historical significance, dramatic setting, and panoramic views over the Sicilian countryside and coastline.
