Verified Castello di Canossa

Canossa, Italy, Italy

Castello di Canossa is one of Italy’s most famous medieval castles, perched on a rocky hill in the province of Reggio Emilia.

Built around the 10th century, it became the powerful stronghold of Matilda of Tuscany and is best known for the historic event of 1077, when Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV sought forgiveness from Pope Gregory VII there during the Investiture Controversy, giving rise to the expression “going to Canossa.”

Once considered one of the strongest fortresses in medieval Italy, the castle was later damaged and rebuilt several times before falling into ruin. Today, its remains are a national monument, admired for their historical importance, dramatic setting, and panoramic views of the surrounding Apennine landscape.
