Castello di Capraia
Capraia e Limite, Metropolitan City of Florence, Italy, Italy
Castello di Capraia is a medieval hilltop fortress in Capraia Fiorentina, part of the municipality of Capraia e Limite near Florence.
First documented in 1090, it was originally built as a strategic stronghold to control traffic along the Arno River and the routes connecting the surrounding Tuscan countryside. During the Middle Ages, the castle belonged to the powerful Alberti family and played an important role in regional conflicts between Florence, Pistoia, and other local powers.
Its fortified walls and elevated position made it a key defensive outpost overlooking the lower Arno Valley. Today, the historic village that developed around the castle still preserves much of its medieval character. Surrounded by the hills of Montalbano, Castello di Capraia is valued for its historical significance, picturesque setting, and connections to Tuscany’s rich medieval heritage.
