Castello di Carpiano
Italy, Italy
Castello di Carpiano is a historic fortified complex located in the town of Carpiano, south of Milan.
Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it was associated with noble families such as the Pusterla and Visconti. In 1396, the estate was granted to the Carthusian monks of the Certosa di Pavia, who later rebuilt and transformed it in 1549. Under the Carthusians, the castle evolved from a military fortress into a fortified agricultural estate, featuring a rectangular layout with corner towers, courtyards, living quarters, stables, and religious spaces.
Many artistic details, including frescoes, decorative marble elements, vaulted rooms, and an oratory dedicated to Saint Bruno, reflected the influence of the monastic community. Today, the castle remains an important historic landmark that showcases the blend of medieval defensive architecture and rural monastic life characteristic of Lombardy.
