Castello di Carpineti is a medieval fortress perched on Mount Antognano in the Reggio Emilia Apennines and is closely associated with the powerful Countess Matilda of Canossa.

Dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries, the castle occupied a strategic position overlooking the Secchia and Tresinaro valleys and became an important political and military center during the Middle Ages. It served as a residence for Matilda, hosted important assemblies of church and political leaders, and provided refuge to Pope Gregory VII during his conflict with Emperor Henry IV in 1077.

Although much of the structure is now in ruins, its surviving towers, walls, and nearby Romanesque church of Sant’Andrea make it one of the most significant historic sites in the former lands of Canossa.
