Castello di Carsoli is a medieval hilltop castle overlooking the town of Carsoli in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

Its origins date back to the late 10th century, when Count Rinaldo of Marsi built a watchtower on Sant’Angelo Hill following the destruction of an earlier settlement by Saracen raids. The fortress was later expanded with defensive walls and further renovated in 1293 during Angevin rule. Over the centuries, the castle belonged to several powerful noble families, including the Orsini and Colonna families.

Played an important role in controlling routes across the Piana del Cavaliere and nearby valleys. Its strategic position made it a key defensive site in the region. Today, much of the castle survives as a ruin, but its strong walls and large watchtower still dominate the landscape. The site remains an important symbol of Carsoli’s medieval heritage and offers visitors impressive views of the surrounding countryside.
