Castello di Cassano d'Adda
Cassano d'Adda, Italy, Italy
Castello di Cassano d'Adda is a historic medieval fortress overlooking the Adda River in the town of Cassano d'Adda, east of Milan.
Built on a strategically important site that controlled a key river crossing, the castle existed by at least the 9th century and was extensively strengthened in the 14th century by Bernabò Visconti as part of the defensive system of the Duchy of Milan. Over the centuries, the castle was associated with powerful families such as the Visconti and Sforza dynasties.
Its commanding position made it an important military stronghold, while later modifications added residential and architectural features, including elegant courtyards, vaulted halls, and defensive walls overlooking the Muzza Canal. After periods of decline, the castle underwent major restoration work in the late 20th century, revealing valuable historic frescoes and preserving its medieval character.
