Castello di Castel di Sangro is a medieval fortress that stands on the highest and oldest part of Castel di Sangro in Italy’s Abruzzo region.
Built in the 11th century on the site of earlier fortifications, it played an important defensive role by overseeing the Sangro Valley and the routes that crossed this mountainous area. The castle was part of the town’s long history as a strategic settlement, which dates back to the ancient Samnite center of Aufidena.
Over the centuries, wars, earthquakes, and other events altered the fortress, leaving only parts of the original structure, including its historic watchtower, visible today. Today, the castle remains one of Castel di Sangro’s most recognizable landmarks. Perched above the town, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and serves as a reminder of the area’s rich medieval heritage.
