Verified Castello di Castrocucco

Italy, Italy

Castello di Castrocucco is a medieval hilltop fortress near Maratea in Basilicata, perched on a dramatic rocky ridge overlooking the mouth of the Noce River and the Tyrrhenian coast.

It was likely built in the 9th century as a Byzantine stronghold and later became an important defensive site controlling the surrounding valley and coastal routes. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of Norman, Angevin, Aragonese, and local noble families.

During the 16th century it was enlarged and adapted to accommodate firearms, reflecting changes in military technology and coastal defense needs. Although now largely in ruins, the castle remains a significant historical landmark. Visitors are drawn to its atmospheric remains, its rich medieval heritage, and the spectacular views of the sea, beaches, and mountains that surround Maratea.
