Castello di Catabbio
Catabbio, Italy
Castello di Catabbio, located in the southern part of Semproniano in Tuscany, Italy, was built in the 12th century by the Aldobrandeschi family. It later passed briefly to the Orsini family of Pitigliano before being taken over by the Republic of Siena in the early 15th century after several conflicts.
The castle played an important role in regional disputes and was attacked and looted in the early 1500s, falling into ruin and becoming uninhabitable. Subsequently, a fortified villa was built nearby for the bishops of Sovana, using stones from the ruined castle.
Today, only the southern part of the original medieval structure remains, incorporated into a larger villa complex with Renaissance and 16th-century architectural features, and the property is now privately owned and used as a farm.
