Verified Castello di Cesnola

Italy, Italy

Castello di Cesnola, also known as Castelletto, is a medieval castle located in the hamlet of Cesnola within the municipality of Settimo Vittone in Piedmont, northern Italy.

Its origins likely date back to the 11th century, and it was expanded over time by local feudal lords who controlled the area. Built on a rocky spur overlooking the Dora Baltea valley and the historic Via Francigena route, the castle occupied a strategically important position and maintained visual links with other nearby fortifications.

It was partially destroyed in the early 16th century after the Duke of Savoy ordered its demolition and was later modified by successive owners, including the noble Palma di Cesnola family. Today, Castello di Cesnola survives mainly as a picturesque ruin surrounded by chestnut woods and terraced vineyards. Although no longer inhabited, it remains a notable example of medieval architecture in the Canavese area and offers impressive views of the surrounding Alpine landscape.
