Castello di Cigognola
Italy, Italy
Castello di Cigognola is a medieval castle perched on a hill above the village of Cigognola in the Oltrepò Pavese region of Lombardy.
Built in the early 13th century, it occupied a strategic position overlooking the Scuropasso Valley and the surrounding plains, making it an important defensive stronghold. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of several noble families, including the Sannazzaro, Beccaria, and Visconti Aicardi Scaramuzza families.
It gradually evolved from a military fortress into an elegant aristocratic residence, with notable 19th century renovations that gave it its distinctive neo-Gothic appearance and prominent battlemented tower. Today, the well-preserved castle remains a private property and is closely associated with wine production in the Oltrepò Pavese.
