Castello di Condojanni
Italy, Italy
Castello di Condojanni is a medieval fortress located near the village of Condojanni in Sant’Ilario dello Ionio, Calabria.
Built by the Normans in the 11th century on a rocky hill overlooking the Locride region, it served as both a lookout point and a refuge for local residents during periods of coastal raids. Under Swabian rule, the castle was expanded and strengthened with additional towers, becoming an important defensive stronghold and the administrative center of the feudal territory of Condojanni.
Over the centuries, it was owned by influential noble families including the Ruffo, Marullo, and Carafa dynasties. Today, only parts of the castle survive, including remnants of its central tower and walls. Despite its ruined state, the site remains a significant example of early medieval architecture in Calabria and is valued for its history and spectacular views of the Ionian coast and surrounding countryside.
