Castello di Cuasso
Italy, Italy
Castello di Cuasso is a medieval fortress ruin located on a hill above Cuasso al Monte in Lombardy, near the Swiss border.
Built on a strategically important site that likely originated as a Roman watchtower and was later expanded during the Lombard period, the castle controlled routes connecting Milan with Alpine passes and overlooking the southern part of Lake Lugano. The fortress played an important defensive role during the Middle Ages, particularly during regional conflicts between rival powers in northern Italy.
As political conditions changed and the Duchy of Milan consolidated control of the area, the castle gradually lost its military importance and fell into decline. Today, only impressive ruins remain, including sections of walls, towers, and fortifications spread across the hilltop. Despite its ruined state, Castello di Cuasso is considered one of the most significant historic defensive sites in the Varese area and is valued for its history, dramatic setting, and panoramic views.
