Verified Castello di Cugnano

Italy, Italy

Castello di Cugnano is an archaeological site and medieval castle ruin located near Monterotondo Marittimo in Tuscany’s Metalliferous Hills.

Its history stretches back to the Etruscan period, when the area was valued for its rich mineral deposits, and it continued to be inhabited during Roman and medieval times. The settlement was strategically important because it controlled local mining activities, especially the extraction of copper and silver.

During the Middle Ages, it developed into a fortified mining castle, serving both as a defensive stronghold and as a center for managing the region’s valuable resources. As mining declined, the castle gradually lost its importance and was abandoned. Today, its ruins provide a fascinating glimpse into more than two thousand years of history, reflecting the site's evolution from an Etruscan mining center to a Roman settlement and later a medieval fortress.
