Verified Castello di Cusano Mutri

Cusano Mutri, Italy, Italy

Castello di Cusano Mutri was a medieval fortress that once dominated the historic center of Cusano Mutri, a picturesque hill town in Campania.

Although only ruins remain today, the castle was an important defensive stronghold and is believed to have been part of the network of fortifications built by the powerful Sanframondo family during the 13th century. The castle stood on a rocky spur overlooking the town and was closely connected to the nearby Church of San Pietro. Historical records describe it as having a large central courtyard, residential rooms, stables, storage areas, and a tower that later served as a dovecote.

In 1780, the fortress was attacked and set on fire during a peasant uprising, contributing to its decline. Today, the surviving ruins are among the most evocative features of Cusano Mutri’s medieval landscape. They offer a glimpse into the town’s feudal past and complement the well-preserved historic center, which is known for its narrow stone streets, traditional architecture, and panoramic views of the Matese mountains.
