Castello di Falaride
Italy, Italy
Castello di Falaride is an ancient Greek fortress located on Monte Sole near Licata, on the southern coast of Sicily, Italy.
The fortress was built in a strategically important position overlooking the coast, the Salso River valley, and key inland routes. Its purpose was to monitor movement, protect territory, and support the influence of ancient Akragas in the region. Today, visitors can still see sections of massive stone walls and rock-cut structures that reflect the site's military role.
Archaeologists continue to study the site, and some debate remains about whether the surviving ruins are the exact fortress associated with Phalaris mentioned in ancient sources. Even so, Castello di Falaride is considered one of the most significant ancient defensive sites in southern Sicily and offers impressive views along with a fascinating glimpse into the island's Greek past.
