Castello di Gamberale is a medieval castle that stands at the highest point of the mountain village of Gamberale in Italy’s Abruzzo region, overlooking the Sangro Valley.

Its origins date back to the 12th century, when it was built around an earlier watchtower and served as an important defensive stronghold controlling the surrounding territory. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of several noble families and was used not only as a fortress but also as a prison and administrative center.

It suffered damage from earthquakes, wartime bombardments during World War II, and later structural collapses, leading to multiple restorations that shaped its present appearance. Today, the castle remains one of Gamberale’s most recognizable landmarks. Although much of the structure has been rebuilt, it still preserves elements of its medieval character and continues to dominate the historic village with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
