Verified Castello di Giulio II

Italy, Italy

Castello di Giulio II is a Renaissance fortress located in the historic village of Ostia Antica, near Rome in the Lazio region.

Built between 1483 and 1486 at the request of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, who later became Pope Julius II, the castle was designed to protect the mouth of the Tiber River, nearby saltworks, and important trade routes. Featuring imposing towers, defensive walls, a moat, and elegant interior spaces, it is considered an important example of Renaissance military architecture.

Although its strategic role declined after floods altered the course of the Tiber in the 16th century, the castle remains a major historical landmark and a popular attraction alongside the archaeological site of Ostia Antica.
