Castello di Isola del Cantone
Isola del Cantone, Italy, Italy
Castello di Isola del Cantone, also known as Palazzo Spinola or Castello Spinola, is a historic castle and former noble residence located in the Ligurian town of Isola del Cantone.
Built in the second half of the 13th century after the area came under the control of the powerful Spinola family, it served for centuries as both a defensive stronghold and the administrative center of their local feudal domain. Over time, the castle gradually lost its military role and evolved into a governmental and residential palace.
Its structure includes a distinctive circular tower, fortified walls, and a loggia added during later renovations. Following the end of the feudal era in the late 18th century, parts of the complex were sold and adapted for residential use. Today, the restored complex is one of the town’s most important historical landmarks. While some sections remain private, the public portion houses the Archaeological Museum of the Upper Scrivia Valley.
