Castello di Maccastorna
Maccastorna, Italy, Italy
Castello di Maccastorna, also known as Castello Belpavone, is a medieval castle located in the small village of Maccastorna in Lombardy.
Built in the 13th century near the Adda River, it occupied a strategic position for controlling local territory and defending important routes through the region. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several noble families, including the Visconti and Bevilacqua families. It was strengthened with defensive features such as walls, a moat, a drawbridge, and towers, and became the setting for notable historical events, including the infamous murder of Carlo Cavalcabò by the condottiere Cabrino Fondulo in 1406.
Despite later alterations, the castle has retained much of its medieval character, with its imposing brick walls, towers, and fortified layout still visible today. Privately owned and dominating the surrounding countryside, it remains one of the most distinctive and well-preserved historic landmarks in the province of Lodi.
