Castello di Mancapane
Italy, Italy
Castello di Mancapane is a medieval fortress located in the hills above Montagna in Valtellina, Lombardy, surrounded by forests at about 900 meters above sea level.
Dating from the 13th century, it was built as a fortified enclosure with a central tower and defensive walls, serving mainly as a lookout point and refuge to monitor and protect the valley below. The castle features a tall stone tower with narrow defensive openings, elevated entrances that were once reached by removable wooden ladders, and remains of its battlements and surrounding walls.
Its strategic position made it an important part of the region’s medieval defense system. Today, the partially restored ruins are reached by a short walk through woodland and are appreciated for their history, local legends, and panoramic setting. Castello di Mancapane is considered one of the most interesting early medieval fortifications in Valtellina.
