Castello di Montalto
Italy, Italy
Castello di Montalto, also known as Castello di Montalto Dora, is a medieval fortress located in Montalto Dora in Piedmont, Italy.
Perched on Monte Crovero above Lake Pistono and the Ivrea area, it occupies a strategic position that once controlled important routes leading toward the Aosta Valley. The castle dates back to around the 10th to 12th centuries and was expanded over time with defensive walls, towers, and a chapel.
Throughout its history it endured wars, attacks, periods of decline, and several restorations, including major work in the late 19th century led by architect Alfredo d’Andrade. Today, the castle is admired for its imposing medieval architecture, scenic hilltop setting, and views of the Park of the Five Lakes of Ivrea. Surrounded by a landscape of great natural beauty, it remains one of the most distinctive historical landmarks in the Canavese region.
