Castello di Montauto-Vallecchi is a historic castle located in the hills near Florence, overlooking the Chianti countryside.

Originally built around 980 AD by the powerful Gherardini family as a defensive fortress, it occupied a strategic position above important routes through the region and was involved in conflicts between rival medieval factions, including the Guelphs and Ghibellines. During the 16th century, the fortress was transformed into an elegant country residence, with Renaissance additions designed by the architect Domenico di Baccio d’Agnolo.

Over time, it passed through the hands of several notable families and was later restored by the publisher Enrico Vallecchi. Today, the castle is surrounded by cypress trees and parkland, preserving both its medieval tower and later architectural features. Its commanding hilltop setting, long history, and panoramic views make it a remarkable example of Tuscany’s blend of fortified and residential architecture.
