Verified Castello di Monte Cascioli

Italy, Italy

Castello di Monte Cascioli was a medieval fortress located on the hill of Sant’Ilario near present-day Scandicci, in Tuscany.

It served as the residence of the powerful Cadolingi family from at least the 10th century and occupied a strategic position overlooking the important route known as the Via Pisana, which connected Florence with western Tuscany. The castle played a significant role in local power struggles during the early Middle Ages.

It was attacked by Florentine forces in 1113 and 1114 and was ultimately destroyed in 1119, marking the end of its military and political importance. Although the fortress no longer exists, its historical significance remains tied to the rise of medieval Florence and the influence of the Cadolingi family. Today, the site is occupied by Villa Monte Cascioli, while the memory of the castle survives through local history and historical records.
