Castello di Montecastelli Alto refers to the historic fortified settlement of Montecastelli Pisano in Tuscany, perched on a hill overlooking the Pavone Valley.

Founded in the medieval period, the castle occupied a strategically important position and was long contested by the bishops of Volterra, local noble families, and neighboring powers because of its control over the surrounding countryside. Much of the village still preserves its medieval character, with stone houses, narrow lanes, ancient walls, and the prominent Pannocchieschi Tower, which once formed part of the castle’s defensive system.

The settlement was built around the fortress and retains the layout of a traditional fortified hilltop town. Today, Montecastelli is valued for its peaceful atmosphere, historic architecture, and panoramic views across the Tuscan landscape. It offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s medieval past while remaining one of the lesser-known but charming historic villages in the province of Pisa.
