Castello di Montecchio Vesponi
Italy, Italy
Castello di Montecchio Vesponi is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Tuscany, located on a hill between Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona in the Province of Arezzo.
Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, and its strategic position allowed it to control important routes through the Chio and Chiana valleys. The castle was frequently contested by powerful cities such as Arezzo, Florence, and Perugia due to its military importance. Much of its current appearance was shaped in the 13th century, when its defensive walls and towers were strengthened, creating the impressive fortress that still survives today.
Surrounded by crenellated walls and dominated by a striking 30‑meter tower, the castle is considered one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in the region. It is also associated with the famous English mercenary John Hawkwood, known in Italy as Giovanni Acuto, who lived there in the late 14th century. Today, the castle remains a landmark of the Tuscan countryside and a remarkable witness to the area's long history.
