Castello di Monteleone Rocca Doria
Via Castello, Italy
Castello di Monteleone Rocca Doria, located in the small town of Monteleone Rocca Doria in Sardinia, was built in the second half of the 13th century by the powerful Genoese Doria family to establish and secure their territorial control in northwestern Sardinia.
The castle stands on a limestone outcrop and originally included a fortified residence along with walls and multiple towers forming a defensive system over an extensive area. Archaeological studies reveal that the fortress housed living quarters, military buildings, and archives.
Defensive upgrades in the late 14th century included a curtain wall with 10 to 11 circular lookout towers extending over 800 meters along the southern slope of the hill. The castle and surrounding village were destroyed in 1436 during a siege by forces of the Crown of Aragon, leading to long-term abandonment. Today, only a few wall sections remain, marking the site of this once strategically important medieval stronghold.
