Castello di Montemassi is a dramatic medieval fortress perched on a hill above the village of Montemassi in Tuscany’s Maremma region.

Built around the 11th century, it was one of the most important strongholds of the powerful Aldobrandeschi family and later became a focal point in the struggles between local noble families and the Republic of Siena. The castle is especially famous for the siege of 1328, when Sienese forces led by Guidoriccio da Fogliano captured the fortress, an event traditionally depicted in a celebrated fresco by Simone Martini in Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico.

Today, the castle survives as an impressive ruin with towers, walls, and a keep that still dominate the surrounding landscape. Its hilltop location offers sweeping views of the Tuscan countryside, making it both a significant historical landmark and one of the most iconic medieval sites in the area.
