Verified Castello di Monteregio

Massa Marittima, Province of Grosseto, Italy, Italy

Castello di Monteregio is a historic castle located in the heart of Massa Marittima, Tuscany, at the point where the town’s medieval old quarter meets the later-developed area of the city.

Built by the Aldobrandeschi family in the 9th century, it is considered the earliest fortified structure around which Massa Marittima gradually grew. Over the centuries, the castle served several important roles. It became a residence for local bishops, later housed the town’s governing authorities, and eventually was transformed into the Sant’Andrea Hospital in the 19th century.

As a result, the building was repeatedly modified while retaining traces of its medieval origins. Today, the castle remains a prominent landmark within Massa Marittima’s historic center. Although much altered from its original form, it reflects more than a thousand years of local history and stands as a symbol of the town’s medieval heritage and architectural evolution.
