Castello di Montmayeur
Italy, Italy
Castello di Montmayeur is a medieval castle ruin located above the village of Arvier in Italy’s Aosta Valley.
Built in the late 13th century on a steep rocky promontory, it occupied a strategic position overlooking the entrance to the Valgrisenche valley and helping control movement through the region. Originally associated with the Montmayeur and d’Avise families and later linked to the House of Savoy, the castle served as a military stronghold and administrative center.
Over time it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin, although its imposing tower and parts of its defensive walls still survive. Today, Castello di Montmayeur is valued for its dramatic hilltop setting, medieval history, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors can reach the site on foot from the nearby village of Grand-Haury and explore the remains of this historic fortress.
