Castello di Nozzano is a well-preserved medieval fortress located just outside Lucca, overlooking the Serchio River near the historic border with Pisa.

Because of its strategic position, it played a key role in defending Lucca and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt during conflicts between the two rival cities. The castle took its current form in 1395, featuring an elliptical ring of walls, towers, and a central fortified stronghold. It served for centuries as an important lookout point, controlling river traffic and protecting the surrounding territory.

Today, Castello di Nozzano and its enclosed village offer visitors a rare glimpse into medieval Tuscany. Its crenellated walls, historic streets, and picturesque setting make it one of the most atmospheric and historically significant fortified settlements in the Lucca area.
