Castello di Padernello
Italy, Italy
Castello di Padernello is a historic moated castle located in the village of Padernello, near Borgo San Giacomo in the province of Brescia.
Built between the late 14th and 15th centuries by the noble Martinengo family, it was designed as a fortified residence and remains one of the most distinctive castles in the Brescian plain. Its drawbridge, moat, four corner towers, and elegant courtyards reflect both its defensive and residential functions.
Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a medieval stronghold into an aristocratic residence, with additional architectural and decorative enhancements added during the 18th century. After a long period of decline and abandonment in the 20th century, it was carefully restored and saved from ruin through local preservation efforts.
Today, Castello di Padernello is a major cultural landmark, hosting guided tours, exhibitions, concerts, and community events. Surrounded by the peaceful countryside, it is also famous for local legends such as the “White Lady” ghost story, which adds to its charm and historical appeal.
