Castello di Palazzolo S/O
Palazzolo sull'Oglio, Italy, Italy
Castello di Palazzolo sull’Oglio, also known as the Rocha Magna, is a medieval fortress built between the 9th and 10th centuries on the left bank of the Oglio River.
It was created as part of a defensive system protecting the historic settlement of Palatioli and played a crucial role in controlling the river and the surrounding border territory. For centuries, the castle served as an important military stronghold under various rulers, including the Scaligeri, Visconti, and the Republic of Venice.
Its distinctive structure features high walls, a deep moat, circular towers, underground passageways, and a central keep, reflecting its strategic importance during the Middle Ages. Although the fortress lost its military role in the 16th century, much of it survives today and has been restored by the municipality. The castle remains one of the most significant historic landmarks in Palazzolo sull’Oglio, closely associated with the town’s iconic Torre del Popolo and its rich medieval heritage.
