Castello di Pilato is a medieval fortified house located in the town of Nus, in Italy’s Aosta Valley.
Built by the Lords of Nus between the 12th and 13th centuries along the historic Via Francigena route, it served as a defensive residence and an important local stronghold. The castle owes its unusual name to a local legend claiming that Pontius Pilate stopped there while traveling into exile, although this story is not supported by historical evidence.
After suffering a fire, the building was abandoned in favor of another nearby castle and gradually fell into ruin. Today, the restored remains of Castello di Pilato include sections of its thick stone walls and distinctive corner watchtowers. As a historic landmark in the heart of Nus, it offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s medieval past and local traditions.
