Verified Castello di Porciano

Stia AR, Italy

Castello di Porciano, located near Stia in Italy's Casentino valley, is a medieval fortress dating back to the early 11th century, originally built by the powerful Guidi family.

It played a significant role during Dante Alighieri's exile from Florence in the early 14th century, offering refuge to the poet who wrote several letters there and featured the surrounding hills in his works.

The castle is known for its imposing 35-meter-high tower with Guelph battlements, the tallest in the Casentino region, and its strategic position overlooking the valley.

Over centuries, it shifted from a defensive stronghold to a noble residence and later faced decline until a major restoration between 1963 and 1978 revived the castle under the patronage of Flaminia Goretti de Flamini and George Specht.

Today, part of the castle functions as a museum showcasing medieval artifacts, agricultural tools, and cultural heritage related to the castle and the Casentino countryside while the upper floors remain a private residence. The site remains a historical symbol reflecting the medieval and Renaissance history of Tuscany.
