Verified Castello di Porrona

Porrona, Italy, Italy

Castello di Porrona is a medieval castle located in the walled village of Porrona in Tuscany’s Maremma region.

Built by the Republic of Siena in the early 13th century as part of the village’s defenses, it occupied a strategic position along the town walls and became an important stronghold in the area. From the 14th century onward, the castle served as a residence for influential Sienese noble families, including the Tolomei and Piccolomini.

It was extensively rebuilt during the Renaissance and later restored in a Neo-Gothic style in the early 20th century, giving it much of its present appearance. Today, Castello di Porrona is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the village, characterized by its stone walls, tower, and medieval atmosphere. Together with the surrounding fortifications and historic buildings, it offers visitors a well-preserved glimpse into Tuscany’s medieval past.
